Former Chamber Chairman Remembered for Many Contributions
Many in Arlington were saddened to learn of the passing of Jerry Jordan, a former Board Chairman, devoted husband and father, and community leader who died Friday, October 15. Jordan was awarded the Chamber’s Star Award in 2009 in recognition of his significant and lasting contributions to the economic growth and vitality of Arlington.

Many people talked about it, but few thought it would ever happen. The perfect Sports Storm in Arlington with a Cowboys Game AND a Rangers World Series Game on the same day. The idea was not an impossibility, but one much like winning the lottery.
Well, Arlington hit the jackpot this year! Fortunately for Arlington, the World Series is not a one day-event like the Super Bowl, but has multiple games, each with a positive economic impact in the community. Unlike the Super Bowl, however, the World Series caught the city by surprise.

Legislative Lunch Next Week, Register Now
The next luncheon in the Arlington Chamber Foundation’s Luncheon series features Texas Speaker of the House Joe Straus. The lunch is scheduled for Tuesday, November 9th. Speaker Straus gives us a preview of issues facing lawmakers when the 82nd legislative session gets underway in 2011.
Joe Straus is in his first term as Speaker of the Texas House. He was elected by unanimous consent in January, 2009, after a bitter, tumultuous six years under leadership that left the House divided even within the political parties.

Arlington to Austin & Washington D.C. Trips
For the fourth consecutive legislative session, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce plans to take Chamber members to Austin early in the 82nd Legislative Session to meet with legislators and agency staff on policy issues important to the Chamber.

Funding to Unsnarl Rail Traffic Announced
A critical goal in advancing intercity rail transit in Tarrant County was reached in October with the announcement of a $34 million federal grant to untangle rail congestion at the Tower 55 rail intersection in Fort Worth. Heavily used tracks that carry freight and passengers throughout the country cross at an on-the-ground intersection in Fort Worth located near the Interstate 30-Interstate 35 intersection. The result is trains going to and from California ports and trains heading to the Midwest or to Mexico wait, sometimes several hours, for their turn to proceed through the intersection, emitting diesel exhaust and burning fuel the entire time.

Team Represents Arlington At Conference
Arlington is poised to be on the ground-floor of economic opportunity from technology as it hosts two upcoming conferences. As part of one of the Center for Innovation’s strategic goals to attract venture capital to this region, The Center for Innovation will host the 2011 National Association of Seed and Venture Funds (NASVF) annual conference in October as well as the 2011 World’s Best Technology Innovation Marketplace in March. These events help to establish Arlington as a new leader in the advancement of innovation capital.

Encourage Young Entrepreneurs with Big Ideas
Here’s your chance to invest in the future by sponsoring AISD’s Entrepreneurship Contest. The contest, geared towards 3rd through 6th grades, encourages students to use their imagination and invent a new product. “What’s Your Big Idea” asks students to explain their invention through artwork or an essay. Sponsorships at the $1,000 and $250 level are available.

Rep. Diane Patrick’s 4th Annual Education Summit
UT Arlington President James D. Spaniolo, Tarrant County College Southeast Campus President Judith Carrier and Arlington ISD Superintendent Jerry McCullough were featured panelists at State Rep. Diane Patrick’s 4th Annual Education Summit October 25. Patrick, who was not present because of a family emergency, received the Champion for Children Award from the Equity Center, a non-profit organization that advocates for school funding adequacy in Texas public schools. Patrick was given the award for her work on early childhood programs and school financing.
